Breaking the Habit

he sat in the chair at the orthodontist office with big crocodile tears touching his eyelids.
he listened intently and nodded.
he put on a brave face and tried not to let those tears fall.

as we walked to the car, he looked at me and said but mama i don't want to stop. i am not ready to stop. it's going to be so hard.

it's a habit he has had since he was about 6 months old.
his thumb has soothed him to sleep, and comforted him when he was frightened or hurt.
it's been his constant companion.
his safety net.

his thumb is starting to cause issues with his teeth. it's a habit that needs to be broken.
he gave it up for about 6 months.
then he had moved into his own bedroom, a big change for a little guy, and he went back to what gave him comfort... his thumb.

last night he brought me his blanket so he wouldn't be tempted to suck his thumb.
i could hear him in his room, restless.
it was getting late and he still wasn't settling into sleep.
i walked in to his room to find big tears streaming down his face
"i can't fall asleep"
my heart was breaking.
in my mama heart i really really wanted to give him his blanket and tell him, its okay just for one more night you can suck your thumb.
but it would defeat the purpose.

instead i laid in bed with my sweet boy and talked to him.
i rubbed his back and scratched his neck until he settled into sleep.
{i am apologizing to landon's future wife right now if he needs his back rubbed or necked scratched when he has trouble sleeping}

as i laid in bed with landon i thought about what the orthodontist had said to me that day.
he told me that no matter what i do, no matter what interventions i try the only way that the thumb sucking will stop is when landon is ready to give it up. he NEEDS to make the choice to stop. he NEEDS to have the desire to stop.

i started to think about how often i've been convicted of a something: a habit that needed to be broken or an attitude that needed to be changed and my reaction.
how often have i stood with crocodile tears sitting on my eyelids?
how often had i stomped my feet and said i am not ready to give it up?
how often have i said it is just too hard?
how often had i said one more day or one more time?
how often has it been my own lack of desire to make a change?

when i feel the nudging of God to change something, an attitude or a habit i've developed i can make the choice to be brave and start making the changes right away.
even though it won't be easy, i know He will be holding my hand and guiding me.
i know that His Father's heart will hurt when i hurt but He wants what is best for me.
i know that i might falter, but He will pick me up and put me back on the right path.
just like if/when landon stumbles and sucks his thumb there will be grace.  there won't be condemnation or judgment.  there will be gentle leading.
i know that even though a habit or attitude has given me comfort, has soothed a hurt it isn't the place where i need to be turning.  i need to turn to Him for comfort and healing.
just as my boy is learning to turn to Him for comfort, for help sleeping, for strength to break his habit.

i think i can learn a thing or two from my brave boy.

Crocktober

last year our late afternoon schedule was a little nutty.
i was gone many afternoons carting kids to/from activities during the time that i would prep dinner and our family would eat dinner.

the crock pot saved dinner time for our family last year.

i could prep dinner in the morning and let it cook/warm in the crock pot all day.
taco meat
chili
soup
baked spaghetti
chicken tetrazzini
spaghetti sauce
etc...

we would come home and have a hot meal ready.
it was perfect.

i have a list of favorite things that would throw in the crock on a rotating basis each week as well that didn't need any prep work.

pork tenderloin - add a 16 oz jar of salsa and 1 1/2 cups brown sugar and have a yummy mexican pork loin or let the tenderloin cook all day with a bit of water and garlic shred it and add a bottle of bbq sauce for bbq pork sandwiches.  i make the entire tenderloin and then freeze the leftovers for a quick easy dinner another evening.

french dip - my all time favorite sandwich.  cook a roast all day with a can of beef broth and a packet of onion soup mix. shred the beef. place beef on a loaf of french bread that has been sliced down the middle. place mozzarella cheese on top of the shredded beef. place the top on the french bread. wrap in aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.  use the reserved liquid for dipping.

our new family favorite: chicken and black bean salsa
this was one of our e-mealz  from last spring
it is easy to prepare and everyone in my family loves it - its a win win!

12.5 oz can chicken, drained {i use chicken breasts i have baked and cut up}
15 oz can of black beans, drained and rinsed
1 c salsa
2 T taco seasoning
1/2 c chicken broth
15 oz can kernel corn, drained {i use frozen corn}

put all items in the crock pot and cook on low for 2 hours or high for 1 hour.

the recipe called for this to be served over a baked potato.  we have eaten it this way and it is really good.  i also serve it in a tortilla like a burrito and with tortilla chips.

do you have a favorite crock pot recipe?

i am linking up with mel today for crock-tober. i can't wait to add some new recipes to my crock pot rotation.

happy friday!

the weather took a turn on tuesday and it finally feels like fall.
yeah!

 i have been wanting/needing a new griddle.
thanks to kohl's cash i now have one :o)
i think landon was almost as excited as i was about the griddle.
he has used it almost every day for his grilled cheese sandwiches.

pizookie about ready to go into the oven.
if you haven't had a pizookie, you NEED to have one.
they are my favorite.

last weekend was like a flashback to my classroom teaching days
i spent saturday afternoon/evening cutting out laminating for the classes i am teaching for my homeschool coop
i was a little bit excited about having this little project... an easy non thinking project i could do while watching a movie

this little man was in the zone during this game last week
1 TD, 4 flags

we went to a birthday party for my friends son
the party favor... goldfish
ours lived one day
i had a little lady in tears so off we went to get a new fish
she loved him so much she wouldn't let him just sit in his fish bowl
he lived about 5 hours
there will be no more fish in the cheney house

i let morgan have a turn holding my boyfriend
isn't he the cutest??
shortly after this picture he started to fuss so i got him back and he fell asleep on me {sigh}
i miss those baby cuddles
so glad i have this guy to cuddle with... often
the birthday party was at our church
landon found this green machine in the storage shed
he loved cruising around the parking lot
he has been saving up for one of these since july
we were waiting for morgan to hop the van to practice and landon climbed this tree
he was almost to the top of the tree
i wasn't quite sure how he was going to get down
i tried not to freak out
this is what boys do... they climb trees and climb as high as they can go
when landon was about 9 months old my dad won a BB gun at a ducks unlimited banquet and gave the gun to us for landon
the gun has been in hiding for years
at some point lance told landon he could have it when he turned 7
so last spring lance wrapped it up and gave it to landon
it has sat in our garage since then
our neighbor got a BB gun and has BB's so he came over so they could test out their BB guns {lance was there supervising the entire time}
another example of things boys do that can give their mothers heart attacks
the entire time i kept thinking of the movie A Christmas Story - "you'll shoot your eye out"
i may or may not have said the same thing and issued a new rule... you must wear protective eye wear when shooting the BB gun
on our way to dance class on monday
she fell asleep about 5 minutes down the road
i am so glad that she does NOT need naps anymore. ha!
the two littles waiting for big sister while she was at her chiropractor appointment

cookies and cream cake balls for a baby shower this week
this is my favorite flavor of cake balls... yum!
one advantage of homeschooling... you can do school in a tent

this boy is making a visit to the orthodontist on tuesday
i am hoping for a mouth guard to help curb the thumb sucking
it was really really cute when he was little
it really isn't so cute anymore when he is 7!
remember the green machine from up top
landon counted his money when we got home from the birthday party and had enough saved up
he now has his very own green machine
he is one happy boy!
erin had mentioned last week on fb that she had her tickets for breaking dawn
so i checked with our local theater and they were on sale
so i made a quick pit stop to pick up tickets for myself and a few friends
can't wait!

lance is turning the big 4-0 this weekend
he isn't a huge cake fan
he doesn't like frosting {seriously?? we share cake really well - cake for him frosting for me}
i decided on an ice cream cake for his dessert
these crushed oreos are serving as the crust...yes please!

you can tell the no napping is working really well for this little lady
she was talking to me and just fell asleep mid conversation
i could watch her sleep all day long.... so peaceful.

how was your week??

PinterTest Kitchen

my friend jessica is hosting a pinterest linky party.

i am so excited about this idea!
i have pinned many a great recipe or idea and done nothing with them.
i am not even sure what i have pinned anymore.
i feel like my boards need a little love and organization.
this is the perfect opportunity to go through my boards and test out some of the inspiration i have found on pinterst.

i found this recipe last summer and tried it out then. i loved having an excuse to make it again to share with you.
the day i saw it on pinterest i knew i had to try it.
it involved a chocolate chip cookie.
if you know me or have read this blog for any amount of time you know i have a slight love affair with chocolate chip cookies.

the recipe was for a pizookie or a deep dish cookie.

i love my chocolate chip cookie recipe so i used my recipe instead of the one on the website.

i used my large and medium pampered chef cookie scoops to fill the ramekin.
once i put the cookie dough in the ramekin i spread it out with a spoon to make a smooth surface.

place the ramekin on a baking tray to bake.
then place in the oven and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
when taking the pizookie off the baking sheet to serve, you will want to use a pot holder or towel as the ramekin will be extremely hot.
top the pizookie with a dollop {or two or three} of ice cream.
the ice cream melts since the pizookie is warm.
it is like heaven in a little cup.

i saw this cheesy chicken lasagna on pinterest yesterday.
it was a cold and rainy day and this recipe looked like the perfect comfort food for dinner.
although it takes a bit of prep time before putting the lasagna together, it was worth it.
it was really good.
it got a thumbs up from the peanut gallery.
if the kids like it, that is success.
this recipe will definitely be making its appearance on our meal plan again.

have you tried any pins from pinterest yet?
did you find success or was it a flop?

Insta Joys

it's friday.

this week has felt like it went on forever.

i have been in recovery mode from being gone last weekend.

yesterday was running a bunch of errands.
today we will be organizing, cleaning, and laundry before a full weekend.

last friday morning we had the opportunity to go to a special screening of A Dolphin's Tale.
we met up with a friend and her kiddos for the screening.
the kids were thrilled as part of the special screening was popcorn and a drink.
the movie was great.

i whipped up a double batch of chocolate chip cookies to take with me to cali
pretty sure she would have left me at the curb at LAX without them

a highlight of the weekend was meeting sweet joy after being bloggy friends for almost 4 years

the blog sugar loveliness on our tables
yummy!
on monday after blog sugar, we had breakfast at the camp in costa mesa
each parking spot had a saying
we all loved this one: show up for life
yes, show up for life.
be intentional
be present.
live a good story.

monday afternoon back to LAX for my flight home

this boy spends most afternoons playing football with the other boys in the neighborhood
he plays football until its time to go to football practice
he is living and breathing football right now... at least until basketball starts

working math with my boy
i am so happy lance put up these white boards in our school room
it makes teaching so much easier when we have a big space to write on

 she was NOT tired
she did NOT need a nap
pretty sure she was right :O)
i went outside to get the mail the other morning
the sun was shining
it was warmish
so i sat down in the grass to sort the mail and sneak a minute of quiet

mauryn has been working on this move
she thinks its pretty cool she can touch her toes to her head

a very full afternoon of errands
a sonic happy hour stop is a requirement to get us through the rest of the afternoon
i did go through a little sonic withdrawal while in cali
so happy to be reunited with my diet dr pepper with cherry and the sonic ice... yummy!
this guy had a football scrimmage last night
in 85 degree temps
when will fall ever get here??

what was the highlight of your week??
